Saint Sebastian by Antonello da Messina, circa 1478

Antonello da Messina presents a surprisingly serene Saint Sebastian, standing tied to a tree with arrows piercing his flesh, yet looking up with a calm, almost dreamy expression rather than screaming in pain. The painting is a masterclass in perspective, featuring a checkered floor and grand arches that draw the eye deep into a bustling Italian city where citizens seem oddly indifferent to the martyrdom happening in the center. Antonello was one of the first Italian painters to adopt oil techniques from the North, allowing for the incredible, luminous detail in the saint's skin and the distant clouds.
