Sunrise I
1937
Arthur Dove, a pioneer of American Modernism, captures the ethereal glow of dawn in this dreamy 1937 composition. Swirling bands of deep blue and violet radiate from a soft, pinkish sun, while jagged white edges give the scene a crackling, energetic texture. A mysterious purple and teal shape floats on the left, grounding the cosmic atmosphere in something almost human. Dove was one of the first American artists to paint purely abstract works, often drawing inspiration from the natural world around his Long Island home.
