Boat with Sun, Deer Isle, Maine
1921
John Marin visited the rugged coast of Maine in 1921 and decided that a calm seascape just wouldn't do. Instead, he exploded the scene into a riot of jagged shapes and vibrant colors, capturing the raw energy of the wind and waves. The sailboats look like they're being tossed about, framed by a bright yellow sun and bold pink borders that make the whole composition feel like it's vibrating. It's a perfect example of American Modernism, turning a simple boat ride into a dynamic, almost musical experience.
