The Old Violinist
1905
Before August Macke became famous for his explosion of bright, joyful colors, he painted this moody, atmospheric scene of an old violinist. Seated against a backdrop of deep shadows and lush green foliage, the white-bearded musician seems completely lost in his music. Created in 1905, this early work shows a much darker, more somber side of the artist before he fully embraced the vibrant Expressionist style he's best known for today. It's a fascinating glimpse into the artistic evolution of a master who would later help define German Expressionism.
