Under the Arcades of Thun (A Strolling Motif)

Under the Arcades of Thun (A Strolling Motif) by August Macke, 1913

August Macke, a star of the 'Blue Rider' Expressionist group, painted this vibrant scene in 1913, just a year before he was tragically killed in World War I. He was obsessed with how colors interact, so instead of painting realistic people, he turned the promenaders of Thun, Switzerland, into walking shapes of pure red, blue, and yellow. The arching trees and umbrellas create a rhythmic tunnel of color, making the whole scene feel like a visual melody rather than a photograph. It’s a joyful, sun-drenched snapshot of life right before the darkness of war took the artist away.
