Red and blue horse
1913
Franz Marc, a pioneer of German Expressionism, believed colors held deep spiritual meanings, assigning blue to masculinity and red to matter and earth. In this vibrant 1913 piece, a fiery orange-red horse dominates the fractured, geometric landscape, while a striking blue horse stands quietly in the foreground. The jagged, colorful shapes surrounding the animals reflect Marc's fascination with Cubism and his desire to show the world through an animal's innocent eyes rather than a human's. Tragically, Marc died in World War I just a few years later, making these joyful, colorful explorations of nature some of his final, most poignant legacies.
