Female nude reclining
1909-1910
Rodin, the legendary sculptor behind 'The Thinker', treated his sketchbook like a laboratory for movement. He famously forbade models from holding static poses, demanding they walk and move naturally so he could capture their raw, shifting energy with rapid, scratchy lines. This reclining nude is a perfect example of that frantic brilliance—the figure seems to be melting into the page, defined by loose loops rather than rigid outlines. It shows us that for Rodin, capturing the 'truth' of a body was far more important than making it look pretty.
