The Embrace by Auguste Rodin, 1900-1910

Rodin is best known for his massive bronze sculptures, but this delicate sketch reveals a much more intimate side of the master. Created around 1900, it depicts two lovers locked in a passionate embrace, their forms blurring together through frantic pencil scribbles and soft washes of yellow and blue watercolor. Rodin famously told his models to ignore him and move naturally, allowing him to capture the raw, fluid energy of the human body rather than a stiff, frozen pose. These drawings were kept largely private during his life because their loose, erotic style was considered too scandalous for the public.
