Adam And Eve
1638
Rembrandt captures the ultimate bad decision in this 1638 etching, showing Adam and Eve right at the moment of temptation in the Garden of Eden. Eve is about to bite the forbidden fruit while a rather creepy, bat-like devil lurks in the tree above, whispering bad ideas into her ear. Unlike the perfect, idealized figures of the Renaissance, Rembrandt gives them messy hair and very human, awkward bodies, making the biblical scene feel surprisingly real and relatable. You can even spot a tiny elephant hiding in the background!
