Two Figures
c. 1905
Most people know Auguste Rodin for his heavy bronze sculptures like The Thinker, but this delicate sheet reveals his secret life as a draftsman. Created around 1905, the piece captures two nude figures in a tender, tangled embrace using swift, sketchy lines and pools of brown watercolor. Rodin actually kept hundreds of these rapid, expressive sketches hidden away in portfolios during his lifetime, calling them his 'secret drawings' because they were far too raw and spontaneous for the conservative public of his day.
