Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian
Bartholomaeus Spranger brings a dramatic, almost theatrical twist to the classic tale of Saint Sebastian in this dynamic sketch. Revealing the Mannerist obsession with complex poses, the figures are twisted and elongated—a style Spranger popularized at the court of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague. Instead of a serene martyrdom, we see chaotic, muscular archers surrounding the saint, who stands tied to a column looking heavenward. Notice the archer in the foreground hunched over and struggling to load a large crossbow; this gritty detail adds realistic tension to the otherwise highly stylized composition, making the viewer feel the impending doom.
