Christ on the Cross
c. 1515
Albrecht Altdorfer was a master of the German Renaissance, and this woodcut shows off his incredible skill with tiny, intricate lines. Notice how the figures at the bottom are huddled in grief, contrasting with the dramatic, radiating light around Christ on the cross. Altdorfer was actually one of the first artists to really focus on landscapes as a main subject, but here he uses the background scenery to set a moody, emotional stage. It's a great example of how printmaking allowed art to be shared widely during the 1500s!
