Portrait of Andries Bicker
1642
Meet Andries Bicker, one of the most powerful men in 17th-century Amsterdam, captured here in his signature massive white ruff collar that screams 'I have money and status.' Painted by the Dutch master Bartholomeus van der Helst in 1642, this portrait shows Bicker holding a small book, perhaps hinting at his intellect alongside his immense wealth as a merchant and mayor. Van der Helst was the go-to guy for Amsterdam's elite who wanted to look important, and he nailed the rich textures of that heavy black velvet cloak perfectly.
