Night

Charles Le Brun

1635-1642

Night by Charles Le Brun, 1635-1642

Long before Charles Le Brun became the 'First Painter' to King Louis XIV and the ultimate boss of French art, he was a young prodigy sketching with incredible intensity. In this moody Baroque drawing titled 'Night', a reclining figure gazes upward into the darkness while a muscular man slumps heavily in the foreground, embodying the exhausting weight of sleep. Created between 1635 and 1642, when Le Brun was barely out of his teens, the piece showcases the dramatic tension and vigorous energy typical of the Baroque movement. It’s a fascinating, raw glimpse into the mind of an artist who would eventually dictate the style of the entire Palace of Versailles.
