The Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine

The Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine by Bartolomé Estebán Murillo, 1680-1682

In this dreamy Baroque scene, Saint Catherine kneels on the steps of heaven, reaching out to touch the baby Jesus held by Mary. She's surrounded by a fluffy cloud of cherubs who seem to be watching the spiritual 'wedding' unfold with great interest. At the very bottom, a sword and a book lie on the ground—these are Catherine's symbols, representing her martyrdom and her wisdom as a scholar. Murillo painted this near the end of his life, using his signature soft, glowing style to make the divine figures look incredibly gentle and human.
