Dresden from the Right Bank of the Elbe, below the Augustus Bridge by Bernardo Bellotto, c.1750

Step into a bustling 1750s morning on the banks of the Elbe River, where locals are busy washing clothes and docking boats beneath a sweeping stone bridge. Bernardo Bellotto, the nephew of the famous Canaletto, painted this view of Dresden with such obsessive, photographic precision that he sometimes signed his uncle's name to boost sales! This incredible attention to detail turned out to be a lifesaver for the city; after Dresden was devastated by bombing in World War II, architects used Bellotto's paintings as literal blueprints to reconstruct the historic baroque skyline you see here.
