David with the Head of Goliath
1631-1641
Young David stands triumphantly here, but instead of gazing at his gruesome trophy—the severed head of the giant Goliath—he looks heavenward with a surprisingly serene expression. Clutching a massive sword in one hand and Goliath's hair in the other, his flamboyant, feathered hat adds a splash of color to the dark, dramatic scene. Strozzi captures the raw, gritty realism of the Baroque era perfectly, making the bloody aftermath feel both shocking and strangely peaceful, as if the young hero is already thanking the heavens for his impossible victory.
