Salvator Mundi
1500
Leonardo da Vinci's 'Salvator Mundi' depicts Christ as the Savior of the World, raising his right hand in blessing while holding a translucent crystal orb in his left. Painted around 1500, this masterpiece was lost for centuries and even painted over before being dramatically rediscovered and restored in the 2000s. In 2017, it shattered all records by selling for a staggering $450 million, becoming the most expensive painting ever sold at auction. The mysterious crystal orb, which strangely doesn't distort the light behind it as real glass would, has sparked endless debate among scientists and art historians about Leonardo's true intentions.
