Bather and Geese
1895
Camille Pissarro captures a quiet, rustic moment in this 1895 print, where a nude bather stands with her back to us, hands clasped behind her head, gazing at a gaggle of geese waddling through a dense, shadowy woodland. The sketchy, energetic lines give the scene a dreamy, almost secretive atmosphere, typical of his later experimental works. You can even see the artist's own handwriting at the bottom left—'7e etat no 1'—marking this as a very early proof from the seventh stage of his printing process!
