Beggar Women by Camille Pissarro, 1889-1899

Camille Pissarro, the only artist to show his work at all eight Impressionist exhibitions, often turned his gaze to the everyday struggles of rural life. Here, two women in long dresses pause at a wooden fence to look at a beggar woman on the other side, rendered with loose, scratchy lines and muted browns and blues. Pissarro was a mentor to giants like Cézanne and Gauguin, and his empathy for the working class shines through in these quiet, unglamorous moments. The initials 'C.P.' in the corner mark this intimate study, likely created between 1889 and 1899.
