Cours Boieldieu, Rouen
1884-189
Camille Pissarro, the 'dean of the Impressionists,' takes us to a damp, misty day in the harbor of Rouen. Instead of his usual sunny fields, he captures a gritty urban scene where men in heavy coats huddle together and a lonely dog sits on the wet pavement, staring into the distance. The scratchy, energetic lines—characteristic of drypoint etching—brilliantly convey the feeling of rain and fog without using any color at all, showing off Pissarro's incredible skill as a printmaker later in his career.
