The Comedian

The Comedian by Paul Klee, 1903

Long before Paul Klee became famous for his colorful, childlike abstract squares, he was drawing dark, satirical figures like this one. Titled 'The Comedian,' the piece shows a weary man wearing a grotesque, caricature-like mask over his own face. The mask features a bulging eye and a long, pointed nose, creating a jarring contrast with the tired, realistic features underneath. It feels like a commentary on the masks people wear in society—hiding their true, perhaps exhausted, selves behind a performance. This early work reveals a much sharper, cynical side of the artist than most people expect.
