Gleaners at Eragny
1897
Camille Pissarro captures the rhythmic, back-breaking work of rural life in this print, created while he lived in the French village of Eragny-sur-Epte. The central figure, a haymaker, leans heavily on her rake, surrounded by scratchy, energetic lines that define the tall grass and other workers in the background. Unlike his flashy Impressionist peers who painted Parisian cafes, Pissarro was the 'dean of the Impressionists' who preferred the honest toil of peasants. This piece, titled Faneuses d’Eragny (Haymakers at Eragny), shows his deep empathy for the working class, a theme he explored throughout his career.
