Edouard Manet, Bust-Length Portrait
1859 - 1862
Edgar Degas captured his friend and fierce rival, Édouard Manet, in this striking profile sketch from around 1860. Notice the intense, scratchy hatching Degas uses to build up Manet’s thick beard and wild hair—it gives the subject a rugged, almost stubborn look. The two artists were inseparable in the early days of the Impressionist movement, spending hours debating art in Parisian cafés. Despite their close bond, their relationship was rocky; Manet once famously cut up a painting Degas made of him and his wife because he was unhappy with the result.
