A House Surrounded by Six Columns by Canaletto, 1735-1746

Master of Venetian views Canaletto etched this scene with obsessive detail, turning a crumbling waterfront building into a masterpiece. You can almost hear the splash of oars as figures navigate small boats around the decaying palace, while a lone observer perches on a ruined wall in the foreground. Created for wealthy tourists on the Grand Tour, these prints were the 18th-century equivalent of postcards, though far more artistic. The intricate cross-hatching in the sky and water shows off Canaletto's incredible skill with a needle and copper plate.
