Christ at the Column

Christ at the Column by Caravaggio, circa 1607

Caravaggio doesn't do subtle; here, he drags the viewer into the brutal reality of Christ's flagellation with visceral intensity. Bound to a column, a muscular Christ is surrounded by three tormentors who emerge from the pitch-black background, their faces twisted in concentration as they tie him up. This is Baroque drama at its finest—using extreme light and shadow (chiaroscuro) to make the muscles and skin look like you could reach out and touch them. Painted around 1607 while the artist was a wanted fugitive, the raw violence in the scene likely mirrors Caravaggio's own turbulent life on the run.
