Model
Most people know Carl Larsson for his bright, sunny watercolors of a cozy Swedish home, but this piece is a total mood swing! Here, he strips away the cheerfulness for a dramatic, shadowy study of a nude model hunched over a stool. The dark background swallows the figure, leaving only the curve of the back illuminated in a sinuous line that hints at Art Nouveau elegance. The handwritten note at the bottom reveals this was a personal gift to his friend and art collector Ernest Thiel, showing a much more serious, academic side of the artist than his famous 'Larsson style' interiors.
