Full Cry
Cecil Aldin was a master of capturing the chaotic joy of the hunt, and this scene is a perfect example of his lively style. In the foreground, a pack of hounds is in 'full cry'—running at top speed with noses to the ground—while the riders in traditional red coats struggle to keep up, leaping over a massive hedge in the distance. The loose, sketchy lines and soft washes of color give the image a sense of immediate motion, as if we are watching the chase happen right now. Aldin was famous for his love of dogs and sporting life, often illustrating books that celebrated the English countryside.
