The Poultry Hanging on Red Bricks by Chaïm Soutine, circa 1924

Soutine was famously obsessed with painting dead animals, keeping actual rotting carcasses hanging in his studio to capture their essence—much to the horror of his neighbors! Here, a pale, ghostly bird hangs suspended in a dark void, framed by aggressive, fiery slashes of red brick. The bird glows with a sickly yellow-green light, making it look almost alive despite its gruesome subject matter. It’s a visceral example of Expressionism, where raw emotion and chaotic brushstrokes matter far more than realistic details.
