Pink Terraces
1882
Charles Blomfield captured New Zealand's legendary Pink and White Terraces just four years before they vanished forever. In this scene, tiny figures in a rowboat glide across the water, dwarfed by the massive, stepped silica formations that cascade down the hillside like a giant's staircase. Often called the 'Eighth Wonder of the World,' these natural hot spring terraces were completely buried and destroyed by a violent volcanic eruption in 1886. Today, Blomfield's vivid depictions serve as some of the most crucial historical records of a geological marvel that the modern world can no longer visit.
