The Shower
c. 1851
Charles-François Daubigny captures the raw, brooding energy of a sudden storm in this dramatic 1851 etching. A lone shepherd stands silhouetted against a turbulent, scratchy sky, watching over a massive flock of sheep huddled on the hillside while his dogs dart through the grass. Daubigny was a key figure in the Barbizon School, a group of artists who dragged their easels out into the muddy French countryside to paint nature exactly as they saw it, paving the way for the Impressionists. You can almost feel the heavy, humid air and hear the distant rumble of thunder just by looking at those dense, frantic lines!
