Chrysanthemum by Chen Hongshou, 1598-1652

Chen Hongshou, a late Ming dynasty master known for his eccentric style, painted these chrysanthemums as a tribute to the Northern Song era, as noted in his inscription. Look closely at the bottom leaves—they have holes in them! This wasn't a mistake; by including insect damage, he was embracing the naturalistic beauty of imperfection favored by ancient masters. The incredibly fine brushwork captures the fluffy texture of the petals, making them look soft enough to touch against the aged background.
