Scholar with Staff and Brush
1598-1652
Chen Hongshou was the absolute master of making scholars look delightfully weird, and this piece is a perfect example of his eccentric style. Notice the figure's strangely elongated robes and that intense, almost grumpy stare as he clutches his staff and brush beneath a gnarly, twisting pine tree. Painted during the chaotic fall of the Ming Dynasty, his art often featured these quirky, exaggerated characters that seemed to poke fun at the rigid, serious ideals of the time. It feels like a 17th-century caricature, but with much better fashion sense!
