Haystacks
1885
Monet was absolutely obsessed with light, and this painting proves it! He painted these humble haystacks over and over again—sometimes 25 times in a single series—just to capture how the sun changed their colors from dawn to dusk. Notice the quick, choppy brushstrokes that make the grass and trees look like they're vibrating with energy? That's classic Impressionism. Instead of painting a perfect photo, he painted the *feeling* of a sunny afternoon in the French countryside. It turns out, a pile of dried grass can be a masterpiece if you look at it the right way.
