Houses of Parliament, London
1900
Monet painted this dreamy, fog-drenched view of London's Parliament while recovering in a hospital bed across the river, peering through the thick smog. He was absolutely obsessed with the London fog, famously declaring that he loved the mist that turned the city into a magical purple and blue watercolor. In this scene, the iconic Gothic architecture is barely a ghost, dissolving completely into the misty Thames river below. He created nearly 20 versions of this scene, chasing the changing light, proving that for Impressionists, the atmosphere was the real star of the show.
