The Contarini Palace
1908
During a trip to Venice in 1908, Claude Monet became utterly obsessed with the city's shifting light and reflections on the water. He captured the Palazzo Contarini not with rigid architectural lines, but with a shimmering dance of lavender, violet, and cool blue brushstrokes. The building seems to melt into the rippling canal below, creating a dreamlike harmony between stone and water. Monet actually struggled with this series, famously complaining that the Venetian light was too beautiful and complex to capture, yet these canvases remain some of his most magical late-career masterpieces.
