Rouen Cathedral; The Portal (Sunlight) by Claude Monet, 1894

Monet set up a temporary studio right across the street from the Rouen Cathedral just to chase the fleeting light across its Gothic facade. In this sun-drenched version, the massive stone structure practically dissolves into a shimmering tapestry of pale blues, whites, and warm yellows, completely ignoring the architectural details in favor of pure atmosphere. He painted nearly thirty versions of this exact same view at different times of day, driving himself crazy trying to capture how sunlight transforms solid stone into something almost weightless. It’s a perfect example of Impressionism, where the feeling of a moment matters more than a photorealistic snapshot.
