Ohashi Atake no yudachi
19th century
Hiroshige masterfully captures a sudden, fierce summer shower sweeping across the Ohashi Bridge in Edo. Sharp, diagonal lines slash across the sky and water, creating a palpable sense of wind and wetness as travelers huddle under umbrellas or bend low against the gale. Even a lone boatman on the river below struggles to pole his craft through the downpour. This iconic print from his 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' series was so influential that it famously inspired Vincent van Gogh to create his own painted copy!
