The Four Trees

The Four Trees by Claude Monet, 1891

Monet was absolutely obsessed with these towering poplars along the Epte River, painting them in all kinds of weather and light. He actually bought the trees from a local timber merchant just to delay their chopping down so he could finish his series! This particular version captures a hazy, dreamlike atmosphere where the tall, slender trunks seem to dissolve into the pale sky and their own reflections in the water below. It's a perfect example of Impressionism, showing how light and color can completely transform a simple landscape.
