Waterloo Bridge, Effect of Fog by Claude Monet, 1903

Staring at this hazy, dreamlike scene, it's hard to believe Monet actually complained about London's notorious fog! He painted this ethereal view of the Waterloo Bridge from his room at the Savoy Hotel, capturing the Thames as it dissolved into a wash of lavender and steel-blue. Because the weather changed so rapidly, he could only work for a few minutes at a time, eventually taking dozens of unfinished canvases back to his studio in France to finish them. It's a masterclass in Impressionism, proving that atmosphere and light matter far more than actual bricks and mortar.
