The races by Constantin Guys

Constantin Guys was the ultimate 19th-century street reporter, capturing the pulse of Paris with a pen instead of a camera. The famous poet Baudelaire even dubbed him the 'painter of modern life' for his ability to freeze fleeting moments like this energetic horse race. A crowd of top-hatted gentlemen and elegant ladies lean eagerly over the railing, totally absorbed as two horses thunder past on the right. The loose, scratchy lines and washes of brown ink make you feel the speed and dust of the track, as if Guys was sketching furiously right there in the stands to catch the finish.
