Flight into Egypt
Cornelis Bisschop captured the urgency of the Holy Family's escape in this loose, expressive sketch from 1654, as signed in the bottom left corner. Mary clutches baby Jesus on a donkey while Joseph leads the way, his cloak billowing as if caught in a sudden wind. The rapid, scribbled lines give the scene a sense of movement and haste, perfectly fitting the biblical story of fleeing to Egypt to escape King Herod. A mysterious star stamp in the bottom right hints at the drawing's long journey through private collections over the centuries.
