Peasant Couple with a Drinker
1689
Cornelis Dusart, a student of the famous peasant-painter Adriaen van Ostade, captures a lively moment of rural mischief in this 1689 scene. On the left, a ragged fellow with a torn yellow jacket chugs enthusiastically from a long horn while clutching a blue-patterned jug, clearly the life of the party—or at least the most drunk. Beside him, a peasant couple watches with amusement; the woman stands with her hands clasped behind her back, while her companion in a green hat grins at the spectacle. Even a scruffy dog has joined the audience to watch the antics. This piece is a perfect example of Dutch Golden Age genre art, which loved to poke fun at the vices and daily lives of common folk.
