Interior with Nursing Mother
ca. 1654 [-] 1658
Imagine peeking into a humble 17th-century Dutch home where a mother is quietly tending to her baby. Cornelis Bega, a master of genre scenes, uses dramatic shadows to focus our attention entirely on the tender bond between the two figures, leaving the rest of the messy room—the unmade bed, the wooden crates—in darkness. It’s a classic example of Baroque realism, showing that everyday moments were just as worthy of art as grand historical events. Bega was actually a student of Adriaen van Ostade, and you can see that influence in the cozy, cluttered interiors.
