Interior with Peasants
1663
Adriaen van Ostade was the master of capturing the rowdy, unpolished life of Dutch peasants, and this 1663 sketch is a perfect example. Inside a dimly lit, rustic tavern, a group of figures are caught in a moment of lively chaos—some are drinking, others are smoking pipes, and one man in the center seems to be laughing heartily. The loose, energetic ink lines give the scene a sense of movement and immediacy, as if the artist was quickly sketching the scene right there in the corner. It's a charming glimpse into the everyday (and often messy) lives of ordinary people during the Dutch Golden Age, far away from the fancy portraits of the rich.
