Statue of Commodus as Hercules 2
Emperor Commodus had a massive ego and a serious obsession with Hercules, even fighting as a gladiator in the arena believing he was the demigod reincarnated. This reddish sketch by Dutch artist Cornelis Pronk captures the famous statue where Commodus strikes a heroic pose, draped in the Nemean lion's skin with his trusty club and shield nearby. Pronk, a master of topographical drawing, meticulously recorded this piece of ancient imperial propaganda, preserving the look of the statue which still stands in Rome today.
