Statue of Commodus as Hercules
This reddish drawing depicts the Roman Emperor Commodus posing as the mythological hero Hercules, a role he famously embraced in real life to boost his popularity. He stands tall with a lion's skin draped over his shoulder and a massive club in his left hand, while a small, cherubic figure clings to the drapery near the lion's head. The Dutch artist Cornelis Pronk signed the work 'CP. f.', creating a detailed academic study of the famous ancient statue. It’s a fascinating glimpse into how 18th-century artists studied classical antiquity, capturing the muscular detail and imperial arrogance of an emperor who literally fought in the Colosseum as a gladiator before being assassinated.
