Statue of the River God Tiber 2 by Cornelis Pronk

Dutch artist Cornelis Pronk brings classical mythology to life in this warm, red chalk drawing of the River Tiber god. The muscular, bearded figure reclines casually, leaning against a tree while the famous she-wolf suckles the twins Romulus and Remus right beside him. Pronk, usually known for his precise architectural sketches, here shows off his academic training by capturing the heavy, stone-like volume of an ancient Roman sculpture. The soft, reddish strokes give the mythical scene a surprisingly intimate feel, as if the god is just taking a break from flowing through Rome.
