Judith and Holofernes
In this dramatic Baroque scene, the biblical heroine Judith stands poised with a sword over the sleeping general Holofernes, ready to behead him and save her people from destruction. Her maidservant watches anxiously holding a lantern, casting a dim light on the tense moment, while a pair of cherubs hover above in the shadows, almost like they're cheering her on. Cornelis Schut captures the drama perfectly with rich reds and deep shadows, making you wonder if she'll actually go through with the gruesome deed!
