The Adoration of the Magi
Cornelis van Cleve brings the classic biblical scene to life with incredible detail and rich, vibrant colors. Mary, draped in deep green and black, gently holds the baby Jesus as the three wise men arrive to pay their respects. The kneeling king, dressed in luxurious furs and jewels, offers his gift with reverence, while the Black king on the right—often identified as Balthazar—looks on with a golden vessel, reflecting a growing trend in Renaissance art to depict the Magi from different continents. Behind them, a bustling landscape unfolds, complete with a winding procession of travelers and a distant castle, showcasing the artist's mastery of both portraiture and scenic depth.
